Position:  Casual Relief Shelter Counsellor

Accountability:  Shelter Manager/Shelter Services Director

Hours of Work:  As needed, must be available to work ALL shifts, which include Days, Afternoons and Overnights, weekdays and weekends

Rate of Pay:  Start rate: $22.33  Job rate $23.02

Location:  Y’s WISH Shelter – Oshawa (undisclosed)

Start Date:  Immediately

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The incumbent develops, coordinates and facilitates professional casework, advocacy and referral services for abused women and children in a confidential, safe, supportive manner.

1. Provide counselling, referral, advocacy and support to abused women and their children.
2. Conduct assessments and provide crisis intervention as required.
3. Maintain appropriate and accurate file documentation and statistical data with respect for confidentiality of client files, subject to legal and policy parameters.
4. Facilitate house meetings and support/education groups for clients.
5. Promote public awareness and foster understanding of the organization and its purpose and philosophy, as well as issues surrounding abused women and their children.
6. Assist/support co-workers within the Shelter staff team.
7. Assist with on-the-job training of new staff, placement students and volunteers.
8. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as assigned and participate in Shelter committees as appropriate/requested.
9. Perform any other duties that may be assigned for the efficient and effective operation of the Shelter.
10. Perform all duties in keeping with the philosophical framework set out in the Mission Statement, values and objectives of the YWCA of Durham.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possess a Diploma or Degree in social services, counselling, health services or a related field.
2. 3 years direct experience counselling abused and at risk women and children in an abused woman’s shelter setting.
3. Previous experience in domestic violence intervention techniques.
4. Sound knowledge of casework, counselling and advocacy principles and application.
5. Knowledge of a range of women’s issues and sensitivity to the diverse needs of women and children exhibited in a supportive and non-judgmental manner.
6. Sound knowledge of community agencies and resources.
7. Ability to write clear and concise reports.
8. Ability to work independently and as part of the Shelter staff team.
9. Understand and respect the confidentiality of the YWCA, partner agencies, and program participants.
10. Excellent organizational, time management, problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential.
11. Demonstrated assertiveness, poise, tact and patience to deal productively with complex and sensitive issues.
12. Current C.P.R. and First Aid training is an asset.
13. Second language is an asset

Position:  Job Skills & Peer Mentoring Program Facilitator

Accountability:  Executive Director

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The incumbent develops, coordinates and facilitates employment preparation, job search and placements for women in our programs including 2^nd Stage, VAW Shelter, Supportive and Interim Housing as well as the broader community.  You will develop and support relationships with Volunteers and businesses that provide opportunities to mentor clients.  You will provide supports and related professional casework, advocacy and referral services for residents in a safe, supportive manner.

1. Support at risk women in developing job readiness skills.
2. Facilitate employment preparation and job search skills workshops for program and community clients
3. Assist women to take practical steps toward self-identified priorities and establishing support networks.
4. Provide workshops on a variety of topics, i.e. wellness and self-care, job readiness, and day to day life skills.
5. Develop effective community partnerships with agencies, companies, and Schools to secure employment opportunities, job placements, volunteer opportunities and job internships for clients
6. Maintain and report monthly statistics, prepare written, narrative and/or statistical reports as required.
7. Assists residents with daily, weekly and monthly tasks, i.e. paying phone bills, setting up bank accounts, accompanying to appointments
8. Responds in a positive manner to all relevant inquiries from residents, potential residents, outside contacts, staff etc.
9. Liaise with the community to promote and maintain cross-sectoral relationships.
10. Promote public awareness and foster understanding of the organization and its purpose and philosophy.
11. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as assigned and participate in YWCA committees as appropriate/requested.
12. Provide back up and additional supports where needed to 2^nd stage staff
13. Perform any other duties that may be assigned for the efficient and effective operation of the YWCA Durham.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possess a Diploma or Degree in Human Resources, Social services or related work experience with a special expertise in Adult Education, Life Skills, and a strong understanding of Social Services.
2. Previous experience in designing and facilitating a variety of workshops on topics such as Employment Readiness, Self-care, Life skills
3. Thorough knowledge of casework, counselling and advocacy principles and application.
4. Thorough knowledge of community agencies and resources.
5. Knowledge of a range of women’s issues and sensitivity to the diverse needs of Women
6. Able to collect, analyze and report statistical data as required.
7. Able to write clear and concise reports.
8. Ability to work independently and as part of the YWCA staff team.
9. Understand and respect the confidentiality of the YWCA, partner agencies, and program participants.
10. Excellent organizational, time management, problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential.
11. Demonstrate assertiveness, poise, tact and patience to deal productively with complex and sensitive issues.
12. Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Position: Caretaker
Accountability: Communications and Fund Development Manager
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week

Location: YWCA Durham Community Enrichment Centre, 1 McGrigor Street, Oshawa
Start Date: December 2022 or January 2023
Contract Length: 24 months – funding provided by Ontario Trillium Foundation

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The incumbent performs general cleaning and minor maintenance duties for YWCA Durham, Community Enrichment Centre and works with other caretaking staff at other YWCA Durham sites as necessary.

1. Performs daily, weekly and monthly general cleaning, as per task list, to all indoor facilities of building including but not limited to, sweeping and mopping of floors, vacuuming and cleaning bathrooms within the Department
2. Performs seasonal ground maintenance such as, snow removal and grass cutting, regular clean-up of garbage, etc.
3. Performs general repairs and responds to minor maintenance issues i.e. plugged toilets, leaky taps, changing door handles, etc.
4. Observes and reports repairs and maintenance to Manager
5. Collects all garbage and recycling from designated areas and is responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of such areas.
6. Responsible for the monitoring of custodial supply inventory
7. Assists with set up and take down of room rentals as required.
8. Respond in a positive manner to all relevant inquiries from clients, outside contacts, staff, etc.
9. Assists/supports co-workers within the YWCA Durham Team
10. Attends all staff meetings and training sessions as assigned
11. Performs any other cleaning/light maintenance related duties that may be assigned for the efficient and effective operation of YWCA Durham
12. Performs all in keeping with the philosophical framework set out in the Mission Statement, values and objectives of the YWCA Durham

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Grade 12 education or equivalent, preference will be given to graduates from a recognized property maintenance and/or custodial/cleaning program
2. 1 year experience in a custodial/maintenance role
3. Certificates of WHMIS and Health and Safety Procedures
4. Physically able to complete all responsibilities and duties, heavy lifting is required
5. Ability to work independently and as part of the YWCA team
6. Understand, respect and maintain the confidentiality of the YWCA and program participants
7. Ability to serve clients and customers in a positive, professional and non-judgmental manner
8. Good organizational, time management, problem solving and decision making skills are essential
9. Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
10. Current CPR and First Aid training is an asset
